podcast [n.]
A podcast is a digital media file or collection of files that is distributed over the internet. The files can then be played back on a computer or personal player [e.g. an Ipod]. The method by which podcasts are distributed is often called podcasting.
University of Birmingham Media Centre, Glossary
The word podcast comes from Apple’s iPod and the word “broadcast”.
There are podcasts on literally every topic imaginable, from podcasters of every kind. Podcasts can be either audio or video. Some are quite personal, others on professional topics. We have concentrated on the second.
The podcasts are separated into two main groups - educational and general. Within each we have divided into Australian and International.
There is also a section on building a podcast or videocast of your own and places where you can have these hosted for Free.
As with all material available from the internet, you should check the source carefully. You should be happy to have an answer
from an expert, but not as confident with information from someone without standing in the area. We have tried to make this a listing which
follows this principle.
Take care when accessing a podcast/videocast to ensure they are suitable and appropriate for the person
using them !
For an article on the History of Podcasting, visit this Wikipedia site. Another site covering history, what they are, other uses and more can be found at Podcast Definition.
