career [n.]
1. an occupation undertaken for a significant period of a person’s life and with opportunities for progress. 2. the time spent by a person in a career.
3. working permanently in or committed to a particular profession.
-ORIGIN mid 16th century [denoting a road or racecourse] : from
French carrière, from Italian carriera, based on Latin carrus ‘wheeled vehicle’.
As indicated above, careers consume a significant part of everyone’s life. At present, the concept of a career is changing, with people often moving from one employer to another and even from one aspect of a profession to another several times during their working life. There are still some common aspects which remain. These include understanding what is involved in any career prior to committing yourself to it, knowing what support and opportunities are available, developing skills to gain access to it and finding support mechanisms both prior to entry, and during your time in, your chosen career. The information on these and the related pages is designed to assist you with this.
